St Michael, The Archangel, stands in the centre of the village of Compton Martin, on a rise of ground with the pond and main road through the village on its north side. Fields leading up to ancient woods bound the south.

Building of the Church probably commenced 1130-1150AD and completion of the Chancel was followed by the Norman arcade of the Nave. It was dedicated to St Michael, The Archangel, a frequent Norman dedication. The name was chosen perhaps as the leader of the angel host against Satan and was intended to be a symbolic representation of the Norman warriors and later Norman rule dominating the Anglo-Saxon inhabitants of Britain.

There is no evidence of the previous existence of an Anglo-Saxon church and no mention of a church is made in the Domesday survey of 1086 which refers to Contona with Morthona consisting of 10 hides or about 2,520 acres. Morton was latterly a hamlet associated with Compton Martin but is now submerged under Chew Valley Lake.*
